Sand Sifter: Nā Mokulua

Each year for the past three decades, I’ve visited my family on Oahu. In 2019 I saw more plastic pollution on the coastline than I’d ever seen. I collected plastic over a couple of days, then spent months sifting, cleaning, and sorting the plastics. Sand Sifter: Nā Mokulua is made from the plastic I gathered within sight of Nā Mokulua (AKA the Mokes) a gorgeous popular background for photos and postcards.

I encourage the viewer to reflect on the history of these found plastics and to reimagine what trash can become.

Collect found trash to make art! Collecting rubbish is free, allows for contemplative time and play outdoors, and while perhaps a drop in the bucket, removes waste from our shorelines and neighborhoods.
